The Origin Story

Do you have any idea how hard it is to name a company, let alone a digital marketing agency? Let’s be honest, digital marketing organizations are a dime a dozen these days*, which means a lot of names are already taken. I have a notebook filled with name ideas, most of them fell into one of three buckets:

  • Already taken by a digital marketing organization
  • Didn’t quite send the message I wanted to get across
  • I just plain didn’t like it

At the end of the day, every facet of marketing rolls up into one foundational mission: to make your story one that people want to hear. Whether you’re selling something or running a non-profit organization, success hinges one two things:

  1. That people understand what you do
  2. That they care

If you don’t succeed at those two things, nothing else matters. How do you succeed at making people understand and care? By telling the right story. THAT is the driving mission I want to help clients achieve and that’s what the name needed to reflect.

Skald

During the naming process, I kept coming back to the word “bard,” the old English term for a poet or storyteller. I liked the meaning behind it, but honestly, just thought it didn’t sound very pretty. Some convoluted process involving a thesaurus and lots of Googling lead me to the word “skald,” essentially the ancient Scandinavian equivalent of a bard.

It’s obscure, it’s a common word but with a different spelling, and it sounds like you’re about to get burned (which isn’t the right message to send regarding a business relationship). All three of these things drive me crazy as a marketer, but still, I couldn’t get the name out of my head. It’s the exact thing I was looking for, a storyteller (plus, it aligns with my heritage).

And thus, Skald Digital Marketing was born. We’re here to help with all your marketing needs, but at the end day, we’ll help you tell your story in a way that makes people want to do business with you. Isn’t that really your main goal?
